EMS Outreach & Communication Award 2019: Communicating climate change
The EMS Outreach and Communication Award 2019 is presented to the project “Communicating Climate Change” (“Comunicare il cambiamento climatico”), by Legambiente Friuli Venezia Giulia and coordinated by the journalist and writer Elisa Cozzarini.
- What is the best way to communicate climate change?
- How can we make people aware of the need to act before it is too late?
- Why is it so difficult to get governments involved in taking action against climate change?
These were the questions the Italian environmental NGO Legambiente FVG (the Friuli Venezia Giulia branch of the organisation) tried to answer. The project consisted of conferences, guided tours, a school competition, video-making, etc. Activities took place from April 2017 to March 2018 in different places in the region and involved scientists, environmental activists, journalists, writers, teachers, students, experts, migrants and, generally, citizens.
As an output of the project, a playlist of ten short documentaries was produced and made freely available with English subtitles:
The documentaries are also available on demand with Slovenian subtitles.
The project is devoted to raising awareness of the effects and impacts of climate change in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. It approaches the topic from very different angles and is aimed at different audiences: from the sea to the mountains, from scientists to the general public, from theoretical information to conferences and hands-on-activities like a guided tour to Mount Canin. Videoclips on YouTube are easily accesible and the science is well explained. Excursions and a school competition on »how to communicate climate change in an engaging way« were also organised in the frame of the project. The project has the potential to make a lasting impact on a broad community.
The Award will be presented to the project partners during the EMS Annual Meeting 2019 in Copenhagen.
