Mateusz Taszarek receives the EMS Young Scientist Award 2023

The EMS Young Scientist Award 2023 is presented to Dr. Mateusz Taszarek, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland, for his important contribution to the understanding of severe convective storm hazards, their accompanying atmospheric environments and relationships to a warming climate across Europe and the United States.

He was nominated with the publication: “Differing Trends in United States and European Severe Thunderstorm Environments in a Warming Climate”, Mateusz Taszarek, John T. Allen, Harold E. Brooks, Natalia Pilguj, and Bartosz Czernecki, Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc., 102, E296–E322, https://doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-20-0004.1.

Mateusz is passionate about understanding severe thunderstorms producing tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds; his first peer-reviewed publication when he started his PhD in 2013 focused already on this topic. Since then, he has intensified his research with more than 40 peer-reviewed studies concerning convective hazards across Europe and the Unitesd States, keen to understand and compare convective environments in different regions of the world: Do severe storms across Australia, Europe and the United States share environmental similarities? will be the topic of his award lecture at EMS2023.

Mateusz Taszarek graduated with an M.Sc. in Environmental Management in 2012 and received a PhD in Meteorology and Climatology in 2017, both  at the Adam Mickiewicz University, Department of Meteorology and Climatology, in Poznań, Poland. Since 2017 he is Assistant Professor of Meteorology at the same unit. As part of his post-doc he has spent over 3 years in Norman, Oklahoma, working on a research projects at the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory and Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies at the University of Oklahoma. He is also a member of European Severe Storms Laboratory and Skywarn Poland.

Award & award lecture

The Award will be presented during the EMS Annual Meeting 2023 in Bratislava, in the Awards Session on Monday afternoon, 4 September 2023.

Mateusz will give the Young Scientist Award Lecture on his recent work entitled Do severe storms across Australia, Europe and the United States share similarities? A comparison of atmospheric profiles and environmental predictors   in Bratislava in session UP1.3 Understanding and modelling of atmospheric hazards and severe weather phenomena on Thursday, 7 September 2023 in the afternoon.
