Young German meteorologists making things happen

The “junge DMG” (jDMG), the youth chapter of the German Meteorological Society (Deutsche Meteorologische Gesellschaft), was founded in 2017. Since then, the jDMG has organized and supported many activities that are important for young meteorologists. At multiple universities, career fairs have been organized, where students can learn about possible future fields of work. In addition, the jDMG has organized standalone workshops and workshops at conferences, and is involved in the planning of StuMeTa, the annual meeting of meteorology students from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The workshops have covered a variety of topics. For example, young scientists were given the opportunity to give presentations and short introductions to programming languages such as Python and Julia. A planned workshop, with the aim of exchanging experience with different formats of public engagement to increase the popularity of meteorology studies for high school students, unfortunately had to be postponed.

For internal and external communication, chat platforms and social media accounts were set up. You can follow the jDMG (@jungedmg) on Instagram or visit the jDMG website if you want to know more about past and upcoming activities.

Another focus of the jDMG is the development of an international network of youth chapters from meteorological societies within the EMS. It is planned to contact the various societies and to jointly organize meetings and networking events at EMS Annual Meetings. If you are interested in a collaboration, please contact the jDMG via junge-dmg@dmg-ev.de or Carola Detring (carola.detring@dmg-ev.de) and Peter Hoffmann (peter.hoffmann@dmg-ev.de), the current chairs of jDMG.
