This was EMS2024 in Barcelona

The EMS2024 in Barcelona was a wonderful event with so many opportunities to meet new people, get fresh ideas, discuss, and enjoy the lovely city of Barcelona. This special 25th EMS anniversary meeting was attended by 1080 participants from 46 countries: 996 onsite in Barcelona and 84 online from across the globe. Of these, 519 people attended an EMS Annual Meeting for the first time.

This year, there were various special events to celebrate 25 years of EMS. A panel discussion on 25 years of EMS – the past, the present, the future during the opening session highlighted the  achievements but also the challenges ahead for the EMS and the launch of the new EMS Journal JEMS was celebrated. The IceBreaker event on Sunday evening was an embracing welcome event  and the Early Career Scientist Apéro on Monday evening provided a nice opportunity for first-time attendees and others to meet fellow scientists and network. If you haven’t seen the anniversary video with lots of amazing interviews yet, you still have the chance to watch it.

The EMS General Assembly on Sunday approved the Net Zero Pledge. In addition, some ECS organised a workshop on Mindful Climate Communication, which also took place on Sunday. The hosts of this year’s conference also organised a unique 25th anniversary celebration on Wednesday evening.

At the closing of the conference on Friday afternoon, the Outstanding Poster Award was presented, which was also open to voting by conference participants this year. The winner was Albert Aparicio Garcia with the poster with the title ‘Enhancing meteorological report access and response time: How the Meteorological Service of Catalonia addresses the rise in weather-related claims’.

More impressions of this year’s conference as photos taken during the awards, opening and media session can be found in the photo gallery. This year, all sessions were recorded and we are still working on the publication of all talks (those for which the presenters and authors have agreed to the publication).  Further information will follow on the conference website or by e-mail to all conference participants at a later date.

Early Career Scientists Apéro

The EMS Apéro for Early Career Scientists (ECSs), kindly sponsored by PRIMET, took place in the early evening of Monday 2nd September in the Vestibùl of the beautiful University of Barcelona. The event was introduced by the EMS President Liz Bentley. It was a great success in terms of peer-to-peer networking, and also gave the ECSs the possibility to make contact with a few senior guests, coming from private companies or from the public sector. We hope everyone enjoyed the event and are looking forward to a follow-up in the next EMS meeting.

Workshop on Mindful Climate Communication

The EMS and COST workshop on Mindful Climate Communication took place on the afternoon of the 1st of September 2024, preceding the official start of the EMS Annual Meeting. Four experts gave talks about different topics: cognitive biases to consider when doing communication, interactions of climate science with journalism and with activism, and what social sciences tell us on how to improve our communication strategies. The topics were further discussed during a “role play” activity, where participants were asked to put themselves in the shoes of a new “person identity” and to judge various communication examples from this new point of view. The workshop finished with a round table discussion comprising speakers and participants, the latter taking turns to join the round table.
