25 years EMS – a round table discussion

As follow-up of the panel discussion during the EMS Annual Meeting 2024 to commemorate 25 years EMS, a new on-line event within the EMS Webinar series brings together an distinguished group of panellists who played – and play – a leading role during these 25 years. The discussion will focus on a recollection of memories from the early ideas and initial goals of the EMS promoters, looking at what of this has been achieved to date, to the perspectives for the future and how the EMS will aim to remain relevant and valuable to the European meteorological community in the coming years.

Although the EMS was formally established in 1999 during the 4th European Conference on Applications of Meteorology (ECAM), the first steps date back to September 1993 during the First ECAM in Oxford, UK, where a meeting of European meteorological societies was arranged with the purpose of becoming mutually acquainted. The successive ECAMs allowed further meetings and discussions of representatives of European meteorological societies until 1998, when a core group from a few national societies met in Leipzig and developed a draft constitution and structure for an association of national meteorological societies. The Leipzig meeting paved the way for the establishment of EMS on 14 September 1999 in Norrköping, Sweden, during the 4th ECAM.
