Propose volunteers for EMS Committees until 15 June 2026
The EMS committees play a vital role in the overall activities of the EMS; its members are volunteers, from EMS Member Societies and EMS Associate Members.
We are looking for new members for two of the EMS committees plus invite volunteers to join the pre-selection committee for the next Europhotometeo competition EPM2027; the formal approval of membership for all committees will take place in August at the next Council session.
1) The Pre-selection committee for EPM2027:
The next Europhotometeo competition will start this November (EPM2027): The organising committee decides on admission of submitted photos; following this is the initial selection phase: all admitted entries will be evaluated by a pre-selection committee consisting of volunteers from EMS Member Societies and Associate Members. The highest-scored photos will be displayed at the EMS public gallery after 1 March 2027. In the second and final selection phase, the jury, consisting of all members of the EMS Council and the Presidents of all EMS Member Societies, will select the top ten entries.
We are inviting members of Member Societies and members/staff of Associate Members to volunteer for the pre-selection committee. The pre-selection phase is compromised to a three week period, likely 3 – 21 February 2027; a couple of hundreds of photos have to be evaluated and points assigned according to a pre-defined scale to each photo.
2) The EMS Committee on Meetings (CoM):
CoM members are involved in the organization of the upcoming Annual Meetings (proposing to the EMS Council the programme of future conferences, including themes, location, date, partnerships and draft budgets) and also taking a strategic look at where the meetings should go to meet new challenges of the community and society.
In general, a CoM member should …
- have a keen interest to contribute to further developing the EMS meetings strategically.
- be available for 3 to 4 online-meetings a year, including their preparation, to discuss strategic items and other new developments that are relevant for EMS meetings.
- participate in Programme and Science Committee (PSC) meetings (2 times a year online, and 1 onsite during the Annual Meeting).
We are now looking for one new CoM member:
- A new member with a specific profile to complement the existing experience on CoM to cover all areas of the community: at this stage a new person ideally with expertise in
- Climate modelling and services OR
- Operational meteorology
would have priority.
At the same time we aim at a geographically balanced CoM membership; therefore in the current situation candidates from southern and southeastern Europe would have a (slight) advantage.
Please have a look at https://www.emetsoc.org/about-ems/project-teams-committees/meetings/ for more background on the CoM and its members.
3) The EMS Media & Communication Committee (MCC):
The MCC investigates the way presentations have an impact on the public, serves as a forum for exchange of experience between meteorologists working in media in different countries, and co-operates with weather presenters in other organisations such as AMS or WMO. It also organises the Media Session at the Annual Meetings and (co-)organises a series of workshops on various aspects of communication for and with different communities.
In line with the EMS policy, the MCC is looking for a person in the early stage of their career (ECS) as a new member on the committee.
A person ideally with
- a keen interest in addressing challenges and opportunities within the rapidly changing ways of communication in every corner of society;
- interest in building networks and exchange experience with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and
- Experience with workshops or the Media Session at the Annual Meetings
would have priority.
Please have a look at https://www.emetsoc.org/about-ems/project-teams-committees/media-and-communication/ for more background on the MCC and its members.
At the same time we aim at a geographically balanced MCC membership; therefore in the current situation candidates from southern and southeastern Europe would have a (slight) advantage.
General Information & deadlines
As mentioned above, new members of committees need to be approved by the EMS Council, with the respective committees making suggestions to Council.
For the committees to make a selection and prepare proposals to the EMS Council, it would be appreciated if any proposals for any of these committees are sent by 15 June 2026.
Please send proposals to ems-sec@emetsoc.org.
Specifically, any proposal for the CoM or the MCC should include a short profile of the candidate, addressing points given above.
EMS Members should seek the candidate’s agreement to actively contribute to the committee before the suggestion is submitted.
For more details on EMS committees and membership see also https://www.emetsoc.org/about-ems/project-teams-committees/
We look forward to receive your proposals.
