Post-doc position on sea ice remote sensing

Barcelona Expert Center in Remote Sensing (BEC), Barcelona, Spain
Closing date: 31 October 2018

The Barcelona Expert Center in Remote Sensing (BEC) – ICM-CSIC invites applications for a Post Doc position on sea ice remote sensing. This position is funded by the Spanish Research Council. The fellow will join BEC’s Cryosphere group, and will work on developing tools and algorithms to retrieve sea ice parameters from L-band passive remote sensing measurements, and applying synergistic approaches between different radiometer data and/or sensor types.

The European Space Agency (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission carries an L-band interferometric radiometer which has the capability to measure thin ice thickness (thanks to the L-band signal penetration), as well as ice concentration, among other parameters.

Candidates for this position must have a PhD or at the level thereof and background on Physics, Mathematics or Engineering. Experience/knowledge on remote sensing and Cryospheric science is also desirable. The candidate should be self-motivated, with good writing and communication skills. Additional required skills include:

  • Data processing and analysis
  • Programming/computational skills, such as in Matlab, Python, C++ and linux minimum.
  • Good interpersonal and team working skills

The contract is initially offered for one year, starting on January 2019, with a gross salary of about 32.500 EUR/year.

Applications should be submitted by e-mailed to Carolina Gabarro (, by October 31st, 2018. Please send complete curriculum vitae and a letter of intent that describes your academic and career goals as well as research interests. Moreover, please provide the name and email of two references.
