Post-Doc-Position (3 years) with a focus on multi hazard and risk assessments
University of Potsdam, Germany
Closing date: 17 September 2018
In October 2015, the DFG Research Training Group “Natural Hazards and Risks in a Changing World” (NatRiskChange) was established at the University of Potsdam and is run in cooperation with the Freie Universität of Berlin, the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). NatRiskChange aims to develop methods that improve hazard and risk analyses and quantifications considering the transient, non‐stationary nature of hazards and risks due to changing natural and anthropogenically altered components of the earth system. Key scientific aims are the development, testing and pilot application of methods that are able to identify, quantify or predict transient natural hazards and associated risks. Earthquakes, floods, mass movements and storms are of major research interest.
In association with NatRiskChange, the University of Potsdam now offers the following position to be filled at the earliest convenience:
1 Academic Staff Member (Postdoc position, full‐time at the salary scale E 13 TV‐L)
The PostDoc‐position is focussed on multi hazard and risk assessments and is planned to facilitate, enlarge and implement the integration of results from different ongoing and finalised PhD‐projects within NatRiskChange. In particular, this project aims at developing a theoretical and methodological framework for the analysis of hazards and risks caused by compound or cascading events preferably within one of the key regions of NatRiskChange, i.e. Germany, the European Alps, the Mediterranean or the Himalayas. Starting from the impacts, important drivers and processes are to be identified and integrated in a risk model. The model should address two or more hazards from the following disciplines: meteorology, hydrology, geomorphology and seismology, and should also include aspects of vulnerability and exposure. The successful candidate will be based at the Institute of Earth and Environmental Science at University of Potsdam.
We are seeking applications from highly motivated Post‐Doc scientists with a strong background in statistics and/or process modelling in meteorology, hydrology or geomorphology, proven by a related PhD. The applicant should be experienced in processing large observation data sets and simulations as well as their statistical evaluation. Fluency in the English language (speaking and writing) as well as willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team, including co‐operations with international university groups, re‐insurance companies and international administrations are essential.
The Post‐Doc‐position is a full‐time fixed‐term employment contract for 3 years. Very good opportunities will be offered to develop an own research profile and to network and present research at conferences and workshops. The contract is time‐limited according to the Academic Fixed‐Term Contract Law (WissZeitVG). The salary scale is TV‐L E13.
Handicapped applicants will be given preference in case of equal suitability. The NatRiskChange consortium strives to increase the proportion of women in research and specifically encourages females to apply for this position.
Applications should include the following components: CV, letter of motivation, research interests including a research plan for the project, a list of publications, PhD and master certificates including a transcript of records, two letters of recommendation as well as an English language certificate. If you do not have an English certificate, please indicate your knowledge and ability to communicate in English with the help of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Applications can only be submitted in one single pdf file (max. 10 MB) to Marlis Patzelt (patzelt@uni‐potsdam.de).
Deadline for applications is 17th September 2018.
