PhD position in the area of lightning associated with volcanic activity

The Institute of Geophysics in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Sciences from the LMU Munich and the Sakurajima Volcano Observatory has built part of a network for observation of various parameters (including eruption velocities, ash sedimentation, electric field gradients, Lightning detection systems etc.) during volcanic eruptions. The university is looking for an enthusiastic PhD student with a background in Meteorology, Geophysics or Physics who is interested to combine models for volcanic eruption column dynamics with models for volcanic lightning to better constrain conditions for the occurrence of lightning during volcanic eruptions. This will mostly be done through numerical modeling but the project also involves processing the data collected at Sakurajima volcano in order to better constrain initial conditions for the modeling as well as test if observations made during an eruption that exhibited lightning are consistent with the model calculations.

The position is for three years and fully funded (75% salary of an E13 research associate position) by the German Science Foundation (DFG).

A university degree in a relevant field, such as Geophysics, Meteorology, or Physics with an interest in Earth Sciences. The project requires very good team work ability, high motivation and very good English skills. A strong background in physics of the atmosphere as well as programming skills would be an asset (preferably in Fortran, MatLab, Python) for data processing and conducting numerical simulations are highly desired.
