Two early-career scientist positions in “Make Our Planet Great Again” (MOPGA)

The positions will contribute to the “Make Our Planet Great Again” (MOPGA) project led by Alessandra Giannini at the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique in Paris, and will be hosted by partner institutions in Dakar, including the CNRS IRL “Environnement, Santé, Sociétes”, and the Laboratoire de Physique de l’Atmosphère et de l’Océan-Siméon Fongang, both on the campus of Cheikh Anta Diop University.
The project seeks to improve understanding of climate change in the Sahel, past, present and future, and of the climate vulnerability of Sahelian societies. Research activities will take place in an interdisciplinary context, involving research labs in Paris and in Dakar, and aim to exchange and co-produce knowledge between the physical and social sciences applied to climate, in order to contribute to the definition of strategies of adaptation to climate change.
- One position is oriented toward the characterization of physical climate change in the Sahel. The researcher will seek to find coherence between multi-decadal trends in precipitation and temperature at daily to seasonal time scales, as observed or perceived since the droughts of the 1980s, and modeled projections of future climate change. - The other position is oriented toward the characterization of the climatic vulnerability of food security and livelihoods in Senegal. The researcher will map the current climatic suitability of agricultural and livelihood systems in Senegal, and investigate their historical evolution in order to identify constraints and opportunities to ensuring that these systems are resilient to climate variability and change. The maximum length of the contract is from hiring till 14 December, 2023, the end date of the project.
