Atmospheric aerosol particles affect climate, air quality, and human health. New particle formation is the initial step in the chain reactions that lead to cloud formation but the mechanisms are not well understood. We conduct laboratory kinetics studies of aerosol formation from various chemical precursors including oxidation products of organic compounds, sulfuric acid, ammonia, and amines to understand how different chemical species affect aerosol formation and growth.
