Two Ph.D. positions on the roles of atmospheric aerosols in climate and environment

Laboratoire Aerologie of CNRS and University Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier are seeking two graduate students to conduct Ph.D. thesis study to reveal the roles of atmospheric aerosols in climate and environment. The French Ph.D system has a duration of three years.

Potential research topics include (but are not limited to): impacts of aerosols on cloud and precipitation formation, on radiation, and on regional as well as global climate; detailed physical and chemical processes through aerosol-cloud interaction; the impact of aerosol properties including mass, chemical composition, mixing state, number concentration, and size distribution on aerosol radiative effects and aerosol-cloud interaction. Study can be conducted in either regional scale or global scale, or both, depending on the interest of the student. The PhD work is part of the project EUROACE, and will be funded by the program ‘Make-Our-Planet-Great-Again’.

A solid master-degree training in atmospheric sciences or related areas, or in data science and machine learning, good communication skills, and strong intellectual curiosity are required. Familiarity with computer program with languages such as Python, C/C++, or FORTRAN is desired. Experience in conducting scientific computations particularly using numerical models of the atmosphere will all be regarded as additional skills.
