MSc and/or Phd positions – tropical transition research
University of Valladolid, Segovia, Spain
Closing date: 1 February 2023
The Atmospheric Science Group in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Valladolid University is currently looking for MSc’s and/or Ph.D. students for the project:
Tropical transitioning cyclones over the North Atlantic and their potential threat to Iberia and surrounding areas: simulations with improved reanalysis and future projections (IBERCANES)
In this project the weather numerical prediction model, HARMONIE-AROME, will be evaluated in future projections related to tropical transitions (TTs), assessing its behavior in this issue. The aim of the work is better understanding of the mechanism for TTs over the North Atlantic area and how anthropogenic Climate Change could affect them, for better evaluating the risk of tropical cyclones affecting the Iberian Peninsula in the future. Different tools (including CPS, satellite images, ASCAT, etc) will be used to analyze the TTs.
Students should have a bachelor’s (or master’s) degree in Atmospheric Science or a related field, good written and oral communication skills. Coding skills (Python, R, NCL, BASH, …) are also desirable. Ability and desire to pursue research both independently and as part of a team. Previous research experience is beneficial but not required.
