PhD position: land-atmosphere interactions

The Department of Geography, Climatology, Climate Dynamics and Climate Change at the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen, Germany, has an immediate opening for 1 PhD position (65%, 36 months, E13 TV-H, Reference is made to § 65 HHG) The successful candidate will join a project, which aims at reducing the uncertainty on regional and local climate induced by land-atmosphere feedbacks in Europe on seasonal, interdecadal, and climate time scales.
As a PhD candidate, you will analyze physical mechanisms governing land-atmosphere interactions, improve the phenological scheme of the regional climate model COSMO-CLM including crop processes, account for seasonal vegetation dynamics (C allocation), and conduct experiments with the model with the new developments on regional and local scales in close collaboration with the project members. Tasks will also include performance assessments against observations, uncertainty analyses, and sensitivity studies. Interpretation and publishing of the results in co-operations with scientists of the German Weather Service, and contribution to the final project report is expected.
Required skills: The applicant must hold a university degree (MSc. or equivalent) in meteorology, geosciences, ecology, environmental sciences or another subject of relevance to the appointment. Applicant should demonstrate programming skills. Knowledge of quantitative or numerical methods in the context of environmental research as well as experience with a land surface model, and/or the interpretation of micrometeorological measurements is highly advantageous. The candidate should be able to work independently and effectively as part of a team setting. All PhD candidates must demonstrate good written and oral communication skills in English.
