Background
The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) is the UK’s Professional and Learned Society for weather and climate and its mission is to promote meteorology as a science, profession and interest.
RMetS publishes eight international science journals, plus an academic book series, which showcase leading research and developments in weather, climate and associated disciplines. Our publishing activities – and all those who have involvement in our journals as Editors in Chief, Editorial Board members, peer reviewers and authors – play a critical part in ensuring that the Society can support the delivery of a wide range of charitable activities and events held for members, the general public, educators, policy and decision makers and the wider meteorological and climate community
Geoscience Data Journal (GDJ) is seeking a new Editor-in-Chief. The Editor-in-Chief will work closely with the Publisher and Society to oversee the effective peer review of manuscripts and undertake initiatives for journal development. The role includes the screening of regular submissions to GDJ and responsibility for peer review decisions. In addition, the Editor-in-Chief should be committed to journal development and editorial standards and will be responsible for implementing and managing core strategic initiatives alongside the Publisher and Society.
This is a voluntary role and provides an opportunity to have a significant influence on the success of the journal and recognising those who contribute to the journal, which can be very rewarding.
The position as Editor-in-Chief of Geoscience Data Journal includes the following responsibilities:
- Maintaining high standards in the peer-review process and ensuring that the Journal adheres to best practice guidance with respect to research integrity and publishing ethics in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publishing Ethics) guidelines.
- Using an online editorial management system to have such contributions peer reviewed by appropriately qualified and experienced persons, to accept or reject manuscripts or to request revision in response to referees’ reports and editorial comments and to communicate with authors as appropriate.
- Working with the Wiley Editorial Office on the day-to-day operations of the Journal in an efficient manner and to provide accepted material to the Publisher in accordance with the Author Guidelines and the Production Schedule.
- Working with the Publisher and Society to maintain a strategy for the development of the Journal, to maintain/increase the status and visibility of the Journal and ensure that the Journal fulfils its aims and serves the readers in its field.
- Communicating regularly with the wider Editorial Board concerning the development of the Journal, editorial strategy, submissions, and promotion.
- Reviewing and renewing the Editorial Board on an annual basis to achieve an active and diverse representation of the community the Journal serves, mentoring new members as needed.
- Assisting the Publisher and Society by promoting the Journal wherever possible through professional contacts and at conferences.
- Ensuring that the Journal’s policies and workflows are inclusive for the communities it serves.
- Attending and contributing to editorial meetings, where appropriate, in collaboration with the Publisher and Society.
- Ensure inclusive policies and workflows for the communities served by the journal.
Desired Attributes and Selection criteria:
- Strong leadership with excellent communication and organizational skills.
- A high level of efficiency and time management with the ability to work to continual deadlines.
- A high level of professional and ethical standards and a commitment to ensuring the Journal maintains a good level of scholarly rigor in the field.
- Experience in editorial decision making with astute editorial judgment in the evaluation of research publication.
- A commitment to the publication of clearly presented and accessible research.
- Active in the field with a good record of personal research, initiative, expertise and performance.
- A willingness to contribute ideas for editorial initiatives and developments such as new themed issues, genres and formats.
- Awareness of changes in the research publishing environment and of relevant technological advances in the publication and dissemination of research. Experience with an online editorial system is preferable.
- A wide existing network of international contacts in the field.
- Willingness when attending conferences to promote and acquire content for the Journal endorsing the remit and goals laid out in the Journal’s Aims & Scope.

Co Editor-in-Chief – Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society (QJ) celebrated its 150th anniversary last year. QJ was initiated in 1873 at a time when meteorological science was growing rapidly in scope and importance and is one of the first atmospheric science journals to be established. During this time many significant and impactful papers have been published as highlighted in the journal’s Anniversary Special Collection. QJ remains an important and well respected journal in the field and continues to attract high quality and novel submissions from across the world.
Role
The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for development and implementation of the journal’s strategy, for providing leadership to the Editorial Board and for overseeing the operation of publication (manuscript submission, reviewing and publication). She/he promotes novel working practices to improve the publication process and works in collaboration with the Royal Meteorological Society and the Publisher, Wiley to increase readership and the submission of high-quality manuscripts. The Editor-in-Chief is the figurehead of the journal and is responsible for raising the journal’s profile within the science community, and ensuring the content published meets the editorial standards of the journal. The Editor-in-Chief also sits on the Royal Meteorological Society’s Scientific Publishing Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the delivery of the Society’s strategic priority for publishing.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities are shared with another Co-Editor in Chief, and between you, the main responsibilities of this role are:
- Upholding the scientific quality of articles published in the journal, and the quality of the review process, by overseeing the peer review process. This includes assigning each submitted article to an Associate Editor with the appropriate expertise (if the article is in scope for the journal) and approving the decision letter on each article, drafted by the AE. This important stage may involve discussion with the AE to achieve consistent and fair decisions on submissions.
- Problem resolution relating to submitted articles. This may relate to queries raised by AEs or authors, or complaints relating to the entire publishing process including submission, review, technical editing, production and publication online or in print.
- To develop, implement and maintain a strategic plan for the Journal in collaboration with the RMetS and the Publisher;
- To provide leadership to an international Editorial Board to ensure the Journal is international and broad in scope, and communicating with the Editorial Board on a regular basis;
- To actively solicit and encourage good-quality manuscripts, including special issues within the scope of the journal;
- To work towards specific development and growth objectives (agreed with the Society and Wiley);
- To actively promote the Journal through contacts, and when undertaking other professional activities;
- To report to and meet with the Society and publishing team;
- To ensure Editor representation from the journal at the two annual RMetS Publications Portfolio meetings (Spring and Autumn) and chair/co-Chair two Editorial Board meetings per year.
Requirements
The successful candidate will ideally be/have:
- Active and well-connected internationally in atmospheric science and related disciplines;
- Broad knowledge in the field;
- Experience in research and publishing in academic journals;
- Experience of reviewing academic journals;
- Motivation to promote the journal widely and to attract submissions;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Ability to work to tight deadlines;
- Experience in leading (or working with) international staff (including remote teams).
Support
As well as working alongside a Co Editor in Chief, the role will be supported by Associate Editors, who have expertise in a wide range of topics spanning the journal scope, and an Editorial Office team. There will also be extensive support from Wiley and the Society.
