Summary of the role
The C3S Climate Data Store (CDS) is the cornerstone of the C3S infrastructure. It provides Essential Climate Variables (ECVs), climate datasets, reanalyses, projections and indicators at temporal and spatial scales relevant to adaptation and mitigation strategies for various sectoral and societal benefit areas. The infrastructure will also support the provision of CAMS datasets.

Along with the data, the CDS includes a set of tools for analysing the evolution of the climate and predicting the impacts of climate change. Users of the CDS can access these tools to develop their own applications online. The CDS has been designed to support a wide range of users with different needs, by facilitating the processing of large data volumes as well as the creation of simple visualisations based on multiple data sources. CDS data and tools form the backbone of the C3S Sectoral Information System (SIS), which provides tools and applications for dealing with climate change impact in different industrial sectors, including energy, water management and agriculture.

The successful candidate will join the Climate Data Store team, located in the Copernicus Production Section of ECMWF’s Forecast Department. She/he will report to the CDS Manager and will work closely with the members of the CDS and Copernicus teams, as well as the C3S users, providers and suppliers, to develop CDS Toolbox applications through the CDS. She/he will become an expert in the understanding, use and limitations of the CDS Toolbox, to provide and maintain a high-quality data service to the end-users.

Due to the increasing number of CDS Toolbox experts (i.e. those users utilising the CDS Toolbox editor and related Python scripting language to create workflows and applications), there is a need to provide support to applications development, as a compulsory component of the C3S service. Whilst the CDS Toolbox editor has been made as user friendly as possible, it still requires a certain level of expertise in data and tools handling (the CDS datasets and the CDS Toolbox tools) to create complex workflows and applications. In addition, some ‘expert’ users (i.e. the CDS Toolbox developers) may want to add new tools into the CDS Toolbox framework, so that they can be used in workflows by other users.

Main duties and key responsibilities

  • Developing CDS Toolbox applications
  • Developing and implementing (or supporting the development of) new specialised tools for the CDS Toolbox
  • Providing support to expert users developing applications, using the CDS Toolbox
  • Developing and implementing a process for validating applications and/or workflows developed by third parties (suppliers, service providers, users) to be added to the C3S catalogue or shared for expert communities
  • Following-up and managing work that ECMWF may outsource to external contractors in the area of CDS applications and tools development
  • Contributing to the definition of the mid and long-term development of the C3S toolbox functionalities
  • Gathering and sharing relevant user needs and service feedback with the Copernicus teams
  • Providing regular training to ECMWF/C3S technical resources (including C3S contractors and users) required to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the CDS Toolbox

Grade remuneration
The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations and the annual salary will be £59,228.40 net of tax. This position is assigned to the employment category STF-PS as defined in the Staff Regulations.

Length of contract: To 31 December 2020, with further extension possible depending on funding of the Copernicus programme at ECMWF.
