ECMWF has been entrusted to operate the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) on behalf of the European Commission until the end of 2020. Copernicus is the European Union (EU) flagship Earth-observation programme. The programme ensures operational monitoring of the atmosphere, oceans, and continental surfaces, and will provide reliable, validated information services for a range of environmental and security applications.

Based on the exploitation of space based and in situ observations and models, Copernicus will provide information services for land, marine, atmospheric and climate monitoring, as well as emergency management and security.

Summary of the role
The C3S Climate Data Store (CDS) is the cornerstone of the C3S infrastructure. It contributes to the provision of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs), climate reanalyses, projections and indicators at temporal and spatial scales relevant to adaptation and mitigation strategies for various sectoral and societal benefit areas. The infrastructure will also progressively support the provision of CAMS datasets.
Along with the data, the CDS includes a set of tools for analysing and predicting the impacts of climate change. Users of the CDS can access these tools to develop their own applications online. The CDS has been designed to support a wide range of users with different needs, by facilitating the processing of large data volumes as well as the creation of simple visualisations based on multiple data sources. CDS data and tools form the backbone of the C3S Sectoral Information System (SIS), which provides tools and applications for dealing with climate impact in different industrial sectors, including energy, water management and agriculture.
The successful candidate will join the Climate Data Store team, located in the Copernicus Production Section of ECMWF’s Forecast Department. She/he will report to the CDS Manager and will work closely with the members of the CDS team to manage the catalogue of datasets served through the CDS. The successful candidate will also work closely with the C3S data providers to integrate their data products into the CDS catalogue. She/he will become an expert in the handling of CDS datasets, to ensure and maintain a high-quality data service to the end-users.

Main duties and key responsibilities

  • Performing governance of the C3S datasets
  • Managing the CDS catalogue, which includes integrating new datasets and implementing any necessary updates required
  • Developing, maintaining and continuously improving the relevant operational tools within the team’s areas of activities regarding climate data handling
  • Working with the C3S data providers on integrating their data sets into the CDS catalogue
  • Interacting on technical matters between the different partners working with the CDS

Grade remuneration
The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations and the annual salary will be £58,238.40 net of tax.
This position is assigned to the employment category STFC as defined in the Staff Regulations.
