Objectives

Meteorologists within the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria have formed a section “Meteorologists”, with effect from 1 January 2011. This section UBP-Meteorologists is acting as the Bulgarian Meteorological Society and will work to include more members and unify all professionals with interests in the atmospheric sciences.

Traditionally, the education in meteorology in Bulgaria is performed at the faculty of Physics of Sofia University. Therefore, the physicists-meteorologists in Bulgaria are members of the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria, and in many cases actively working for the professional society. The section “Meteorologists” started with 30 members mainly working at the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) at the Bulgarian academy of Sciences (BAS). NIMH acts both as research institute in all fields of meteorology and as the National Hydro-meteorological Service.

The potential of the newly formed section “Meteorologists” is wide, as actions are taken to invite all professionals in the field from other research, education institutions and governmental, as well as from industry.
