Media Workshop “Communication of the impact of climate change in the ocean: knowledge, tools and perspectives”

As part of the International Weather and Climate Forum since 2004, the Media Workshop brings together Weather Presenters from all around the world and representatives from international organisations working in Weather, Climate, Environment, Ocean and Earth Observation fields.

Dedicated to the interactions between ocean and climate, the 2025 edition will be hosted in Nice, France, from June 6 to 8, prior to the United Nations Conference on the Oceans, in the EU Digital Ocean Pavilion run by Mercator Ocean International.

It will provide over 100 weather presenters from 74 countries with the knowledge and tools they need to communicate effectively on the impacts of climate change in the oceans.

Built on the shared knowledge on digital ocean monitoring using innovative models and observations, and the latest scientific findings on the ocean’s role in the climate system and its response to climate change, the workshop will discuss the contribution of digital ocean information to the understanding of changes in the ocean and to innovative media communication strategies on the theme “ocean and climate change”.

On the first day scientists will explain how the “digital ocean” integrates ocean models and observations to monitor and predict the ocean from the open sea to the coast in support of ocean governance and a sustainable blue economy. Digital ocean applications and benefits expected in different parts of the world will be discussed in the context of the UN Decade for Ocean Science and sustainable development.

On the second day scientists and weather and climate journalists will share evidence of changes ongoing in the ocean due to climate change and other human pressure, and discuss how key messages from the science community illustrated by digital ocean indicators and observations could be used for media communication on “ocean and climate change” and impacts of ocean changes on people and marine ecosystems.
