EMS Webinar: Your secret advice for the EMS Annual Meeting

Abstract

Science is not only a multicultural effort but also multi-generational! It relies on the distribution and communication of knowledge. However, as scientists we tend to talk a lot about our research and less about the so-called ‘soft skills’, e.g. how to give an inspiring presentation, how to work effectively in a team or how to prepare best for the next conference.

In this session of the EMS webinar series we will hear the secret advice of four panellists. What would they have liked to know a few years ago, before attending their first ever conference? Or what did they just learn recently, that enhanced their work, attitude or visibility in the science world? There will be a short discussion amongst the panellists, followed by a Q&A session for questions from the audience.
The webinar is mainly intended to help early career scientists preparing for their first conference. But it can also be a recap for experienced scientists and a platform to share helpful insights and experiences.

This webinar will again feature a panel discussion, lead and moderated by Julia Thomas, KIT, Karlsruhe.

The panellists

• Carlos Román Cascón, is a lecturer (Profesor Contratado Doctor) atUniversidad de Cádiz – INMAR, Departamento de Física Aplicada. Puerto Real, Spain: ​Physical Oceanography research group. Currently he is working on land use-soil moisture-surface fluxes relationships using in-situ, satellite and model data. Carlos has been a convenor of the session on Atmospheric boundary-layer processes, turbulence and land-atmosphere interactions since 2020.
• Bianca Mezzina, currently Scientist in Earth System Predictability Section, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Bianca joined ECMWF in 2025 as a Scientist within the European projects EERIE and ASPECT. She is currently investigating how large-scale variability and tropical-extratropical atmospheric teleconnections are represented in different models. She previously worked on Antarctic sea ice variability and is still passionate about the topic.
  Bianca was first a conference assistant at the EMS2026 in Trieste, and since has contributed to the Annual Meetings, also in her role as convenor. She won the EMS Young Scientist Award in 2024.
• Filip Assumpção-Bukowski, MetEireann
  Filip is an Impact-Based Forecasting Specialist dedicated to bridging the gap between meteorological data and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). His expertise lies in shifting the focus from “what the weather will be” to “what the weather will do”, ensuring that Impact-Based Warnings trigger timely Anticipatory Action.
