EMS strengthens its pathway to Net Zero by 2040
The European Meteorological Society (EMS) is continuing to turn its Net Zero pledge into practical action, with a clear framework for measuring emissions, reducing our environmental impact and reporting progress transparently to our Members.
EMS committed in 2024 to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040, supported by interim targets of at least a 33% reduction by 2030 and 66% by 2035, relative to the 2023 baseline. Since then, a number of important steps have been taken, including introducing a Sustainable Transport Policy, embedding the transition plan within EMS strategy, becoming a signatory to Pledge to Net Zero and updating the Sustainable Meetings Policy.
Measuring our progress
A new emissions reporting framework will provide a more consistent basis for tracking progress. Based on the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas Protocol, it considers Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and establishes an initial baseline that can be improved as better data become available.
The preliminary data reinforce where EMS can make the biggest difference. With Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions currently reported as zero, all of EMS operational emissions fall within Scope 3. The EMS Annual Meeting is the largest individual source, meaning that decisions about venues, energy, catering, procurement, event materials and waste provide significant opportunities for action.
We also recognise that delegate travel is an important part of the wider environmental footprint of our meetings. EMS intends to report relevant information transparently, including delegate travel and accommodation, while keeping it separate from the formal EMS inventory where necessary to avoid double counting.
From commitment to continuous improvement
Our approach is not about claiming that every emissions estimate is exact. It is about using a consistent methodology that allows us to understand trends, make better decisions and demonstrate progress over time.
Communication will also become a stronger part of the transition. Our communications programme will increase awareness of the pledge, publish progress and emissions data, highlight improvements at EMS meetings, and share good practice from across our Member Societies and partners.
Achieving Net Zero will be a journey of learning and improvement. By measuring our impact, being transparent about progress and challenges, and sharing what works, EMS aims not only to reduce its own footprint but also to support and inspire action across the European meteorological community.
