EMS Council meets in Ingolstadt

The EMS Council was invited by Jörg Steinwagner, EMS Vice-President and also President of the German Met Society (DMG), to hold its 56th Session in Ingolstadt at the Georgianum.

Important decisions were taken to develop the EMS further

  • The Bureau considered the nomination received for the office of the next EMS President and the Council approved it. Florence Rabier has been elected as the 10th President of the EMS, taking over the office from Liz Bentley during the EMS Annual Meeting in September 2026 in Utrecht
  • The EMS Silver Medallist and the recipients of the EMS Technology Achievement Award 2026 were selected.
  • Following the recommendation of the EMS Committee on Meetings (CoM), the Council accepted the venue proposal of the Croatian Meteorological Society for the EMS Annual Meeting in 2028 in Zagreb. The Council approved the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, as venue for the EMS2028. The EMS2028 will be held 10-15 September 2028.
  • Two new members of the Committee on Meetings were approved by the Council: Kristína Szabóová (Slovak Hydrometeorological Service) as a representative of Early Career Scientists (ECS) and Roope Tervo (EUMETSAT) to complement the expertise on the CoM.
  • There were updates on JEMS activities, reporting on emissions related to EMS activities in the context of the EMS pledge to become Net Zero by 2040, the next EMS Europhotometeo competition (EPM), discussions about the management of Memoranda of Understanding, EMS membership and the next Council composition.

The next Council Session will be held as an online meeting on 26 August 2026; the 28th General Assembly will convene in Utrecht on the Sunday preceding the EMS2026: 6 September 2026.
