ECMWF Forecast User Side Event at EMS2024

ECMWF is excited to be running a side event at EMS2024 to complement its annual Using ECMWF’s Forecasts (UEF) event. This side event will consist of four sessions, each session will have a focal topic for discussion, two sessions will have a moderated attendance (registration is required) and two will be drop-in sessions open to all.

Note that the event is offered for registered participants of the EMS2024 conference

Session 1 – Moderated Session: Hopes, dreams and fears of using Machine Learning for operational forecasting

Tuesday 3 September 09:00 – 10:15

This session will host discussions on what ECMWF forecast users would like to see from ECMWF Machine Learning, as well as challenges faced by forecasters when using machine learning operationally.
The session is aimed at operational forecasters, commerical users and researchers interested in using machine learning forecast models and products in operational environments. Attendance will be moderated to ensure a variety of organisations and countries.

Session 2 – Moderated Session: ECMWF Forecasts – the good and the bad

Tuesday 3 September 11:00 – 12:30

This session is a forum to provide feedback on ECMWF forecasts – these can be both good and bad forecast cases – and discuss this feedback with other attendees and ECMWF staff. Each attendee is asked to bring 3 good or bad ECMWF forecast cases to the session with associated images/charts for group discussion.

This session is aimed at operational forecasters particularly from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) and commerical users of ECMWF forecasts. Attendance will be moderated to ensure a variety of organisations and countries.

Session 3 – Drop-in Session: Talk data to us! – ECMWF Data Access Drop-in

Tuesday 3 September 14:00 – 15:30

Do you want to learn more about how to access ECMWF data e.g. via Jupyter Notebooks, MARS or the Common Data Store (CDS)? Want to know if you can access ECMWF data using a research license? Are you experiencing issues accessing ECMWF data?

ECMWF will be holding a drop-in session where experts will be available to help answer all your questions related to ECMWF data access. This session is aimed at all ECMWF data users including research, commerical and public users.

This session is a drop-in – no registration is needed however if you would like to receive a reminder about the session please register your interest for the ECMWF Data Access Drop-in session here

ECMWF’s Data Support Team is also offering 1-to-1 meetings so you can discuss topics and issues in a dedicated discussion. These meetings are 10 minutes long and on a first come first served basis as limited slots are available. If you would like a 1-to-1 meeting please complete this form

In this session you can learn more about Special Projects and the European Weather Cloud including the Common Cloud Infrastructure. Experts will be available for you to talk to about these ECMWF computing services and how to access them. General questions on ECMWF products and services are also welcome.

This session is aimed primarily at research users from ECMWF Member and Co-operating States.
