Call for volunteers on EMS committees

The EMS committees play a vital role in the overall activities of the EMS; its members are volunteers, from EMS Member Societies and EMS Associate Members.

We are looking for new members for two of the EMS committees, for three year terms starting as early as possible; the formal approval would take place in early March at the next Council session.

The Technology Achievement Award (TAA) Selection Committee

The TAA is for projects or individuals who have achieved impressive technological results, like developing a model, a data base system, a meteorological workstation, a weather app, an AI platform etc. More details on this award and earlier recipients can be found at https://www.emetsoc.org/awards/award-category/ems-technology-achievement-award/

The main tasks of the TAA Selection Committee include

  • To evaluate the nominations,
  • To make a recommendation to the EMS Council for the final selection of an awardee,
  • To suggest revisions of the Terms of Reference for the TAA in light of gained experience in the selection process.

The work of this committee each year is concentrated to a short period in mid-December (when short proposals might come in) and February, after the full nominations have been received and need to be evaluated in detail.
Please find more details at
https://www.emetsoc.org/about-ems/project-teams-committees/awards/
The committee has no vacancy as such, but following strategic discussions within EMS there is a strong recommendation and wish to include more early career scientists in all the work areas of the EMS and the TAA Selection Committee aims for a mix of senior and young people.

The EMS Committee on Meetings (CoM)

CoM members are involved in the upcoming Annual Meetings (proposing to the EMS Council the programme of future conferences, including themes, location, date, partnerships and draft budgets) and also taking a strategic look at where the meetings should go to meet new challenges of the community and society.
In general, a CoM member should …

  • Have a keen interest to contribute to further developing the EMS meetings.
  • Be available for 3 or 4 online-meetings a year, including their preparation to discuss strategic items and other new developments that are relevant for EMS meetings.
  • Participate in Programme and Science Committee (PSC) meetings (2 times a year online, and during the respective Annual Meeting).

We are now looking for two new CoM members:

  • An Early Career Scientist as successor to Alice Portal, who has worked with CoM over the last 3 years; the term of an ECS on CoM is three years and generally not renewable.
The CoM is looking for an ECS who would be keen to develop specific events for ECS in the frame of the Annual Meeting, such as the Apéro (a standard in recent years), or the ECS Speed networking event, held at EMS2025. New ideas are more than welcome: To help improve and shape future ECS activities, feeding feedback from other ECS participants to the CoM would also be welcome.
Previous participation in an EMS Annual Meeting would be beneficial, though not mandatory. A strong interest in participating in future meetings, aligned with career development, would be especially appreciated.
  • A new member with a specific profile to complement the existing experience on CoM to cover all areas of the community: at this stage a new person ideally with expertise in
    • Climate modelling and services, or
    • Machine learning

would have priority. Please have a look at https://www.emetsoc.org/about-ems/project-teams-committees/meetings/ for more background on the CoM and its members.

Generally,

  • members of the EMS committees need to be members of one of the EMS Member Societies or a member or staff of an Associate Member.
  • Member Societies and Associate Members alike are eligible to submit proposals.

A proposal should include a short profile of the candidate, addressing points given above. The proposing organisation should seek the candidate’s agreement to actively contribute to the committee before the suggestion is submitted. For more details on EMS committees and membership see also https://www.emetsoc.org/about-ems/project-teams-committees/

As mentioned above, new members of committees need to be approved by the EMS Council, with the respective committees making suggestions to Council. For the committees to make a selection and prepare proposals to the EMS Council, it would be appreciated if proposals for any of these committees are sent by 15 December 2025 to the EMS secretariat at ems-sec (at) emetsoc.org

We look forward to receive your proposals. Thank you, on behalf of the TAA committee and CoM.
