Nikolaos Papanikolaou

Nikolaos Papanikolaou of the Delft University of Technology was the winner of the EMS2026 Outstanding Poster Award, presenting the work on “Indoor–Outdoor Heat Stress Coupling in Residential Buildings: A Human Biometeorology Perspective” by Nikolaos Papanikolaou  & Arjan Droste.

Heatwaves become more frequent and intense like it was experienced in most of Europe this summer. This poster investigates how extreme outdoor heat affects the temperature and comfort of people inside buildings. Using weather measurements, building simulations and indoor monitoring, it explores how outdoor conditions translate into indoor thermal stress.

The results will help improve the design of homes and buildings, so they remain more comfortable and resilient as the climate gets warmer. It offers valid and realistic considerations for stakeholders, policymakers and those involved in issuing heat stress warnings.
The eye-catching style of this poster and its intuitive structure strongly met design criteria for the poster award. The committee also valued the enthusiastic and thorough discussion of the poster at the poster session.
