This year, the European Severe Storms Laboratory (ESSL), turns 20! A nonprofit research organisation dedicated to severe convective storm research and education was formally founded in September 2006. However, the idea behind this initiative had emerged several years earlier.[more]

The recipient of the EMS Tromp Award for outstanding achievement in biometeorology 2026 is Coral Salvador of the University of Bern, awarded for the publication on “Analyzing the effects of drought at different time scales on cause-specific mortality in South Africa”, investigating the link between different types of droughts and cause-specific mortality in South Africa. The study of Coral Salvador and her colleagues sheds light on how age and drought duration influence population vulnerability, filling a critical gap in human health research.[more]

The eighth and final paper is entitled Decades of science results and new technologies related to measurements of Earth’s Radiation Budget from space and a pathway for continuity of observations, authored by Thomas Vonder Haar, Peter Pilewskie, Maria Hakuba and Stanley Kidder. This contribution is a concise discussion of Earth Radiation Budget measurements from satellites – a research topic Ehrhard Raschke pioneered with colleagues – and a clear outlook toward the future.[more]

Carlos Calvo-Sancho, Spain, was awarded for the publication “Human-induced climate change amplification on storm dynamics in Valencia’s 2024 catastrophic flash flood,” published in Nature Communications. The publication is of extraordinary interest both to the meteorological community and to society at large.[more]

The EMS is awarding the EMS Technology Achievement Award 2026 to Windy.com, an all-in-one weather app for those who make crucial weather-related decisions. It stands out in the meteorological sector for transforming complex weather data into easily understandable formats. The app is very attractive, and adds value to active people in many sports, whereas it also offers specific and adapted visualization for individual needs.[more]

Markus Repnik receives the EMS Silver Medal for his outstanding leadership and impact on the European meteorological community through the creation of the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF), enhancing Europe’s role in sustaining global surface-based observations that are essential for modern weather prediction.[more]
