European Meteorological Society ems-message

November 2019

Hello everyone,

Welcome to this new edition of the ems-message, the newsletter of the European Meteorological Society.

Sadly, Jon Wieringa, one of the founding fathers of the EMS, has suddenly died on 1 November. His commitment until the very end is commemorated in the obituary of the Dutch Meteorological Society of which he was an Honorary Member.

The EMS Council and General Assembly met in Lyngby, Denmark, on 8 September. This edition of the ems-message contains information about the outcome of those meetings, the contributions made to developing a new strategic plan, and the appointment of three new members of Council. It is also a pleasure to record that the General Assembly welcomed two new Member organisations: the newly-established Estonian Meteorological Society and the Danish Meteorological Institute.

This edition of the ems-message also includes items associated with the EMS Annual Meeting that was held in Lyngby as well as items dealing with a variety of other topics.

The EMS Liaison Committee oversees the preparation of the ems-message. Emily Gleeson, Sinead Duffy and Laura Zubiate have left the committee and they are thanked for their contributions to the preparation and development of the ems-message.

We welcome all feedback - please e-mail publications ( at ) emetsoc.org if you wish to share your ideas and opinions with us.

Bob Riddaway
on behalf of the EMS Liaison Committee
