Dear readers,
the centre of the EMS activities each year is the EMS Annual Meeting. This year's event is just a couple of days away: find here all relevant information for your EMS2026 attendance. In particular we would like to highlight the events and support for Early Career Scientists: We are pleased to offer a new edition of the ECS Speed networking event at which we connect researchers in the early stages of their career with experienced actors in the field. We still have a few places, so if you know someone who might be interested invite them to sign up.
On the eve of the events, the EMS General Assembly that brings together the entire Membership of the EMS will convene to discuss achievements of the previous year - as reported in the Annual Report 2025 - and the further development directions of the EMS.
The upcoming event will mark the end of Liz Bentley's term as EMS President. The past three years have been remarkably productive under her leadership, the pledge of the EMS to become Net Zero by 20240 stands out for her vision to guide organisations into the future in challenging times. A further step in the transition is the major review of the Sustainable Meetings Policy that is put to the General Assembly for approval and includes measurable milestones for the next decade.
With the end of the conference Florence Rabier will take over as EMS President and we spoke with Florence about her ideas for the EMS - find out about her views of this office and the perspectives for EMS under her leadership.
An important event in Utrecht will be the Awards Session at which we will honour all our awardees. Find out here about the awardees and the lectures they will present. The highlight of the session will then be the hand over of the Silver Medal to Markus Repnik for his leadership and impact on the European meteorological community through the creation of the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF), and his lecture on "Innovating ways to support developing countries in closing their basic weather and climate data gaps".
JEMS - the Journal of the EMS has now been firmly established, it is index in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) as well as Scopus. A new special issue on EUMETSAT's 40-year anniversary is currently in progress, and a special joint event to Meet the JEMS Editors in Chief and highlight EUMETSAT's achievements is being planned for the week in Utrecht.
Finally, we were sad to learn that our past President Horst Böttger has passed away in May, shortly before his 80th birthday. We have collected memories of colleagues and friends and honour him with this for his service to the community.
