April 2026
Dear readers,
in March the EMS Council met in Ingolstad, Germany, for it spring session, and we are delighted to announce that Florence Rabier was elected to become the next President of the EMS. She will take over the office from Liz Bentley on the closing day of the EMS2026 in Utrecht in September.
The Council made other important decisions: it selected Markus Repnik, Director of the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) secretariat as the recipient of this year's EMS Silver Medal, and Windy.com as the winner of the EMS Technology Achievement Award 2026.
EMS Webinar series: This week we continued the EMS Webinar series with an interesting presentation by Gonéri Le Cozannet, French Geological Survey (BGRM), on Adaptation to sea-level rise: toward transformations? If you missed the event: The recording is available on the EMS YouTube channel
The abstract submission for the EMS2026 closed earlier this week and we have received more than 750 abstracts. The session convenors and Programme and Science Committee will now develop the session schedule and detailed session programme which will be published by 22 June 2026. In the meantime browse all the information on events in particular for early career scientists, excursions, and workshops. Registration for events will open in May.
2026 awards: The deadlines for further prestigious awards are approaching fast: the EMS Young Scientist Award (20 April), the EMS Tromp Award for an outstanding achievement in biometeorology (20 April), and all three EMS Media Awards (05 May). All award recipients will be invited to the Annual Meeting in Utrecht to present their work in an award lecture.
