February 2026
Dear readers,
the year 2026 is still young, a lot of activities have already taken place in the EMS community. A Memorandum of understanding has been signed by the EMS and the Korean Meteorological Society, the EMS Webinars 2026 did kick off a couple of days ago and of course the programme development of the EMS2026 is progressing fast-paced, with the call for abstracts now out.
EMS Webinar recording: If you missed the interesting presentation on Distilling reliable, robust, and relevant information from global climate models for climate adaptation by Rasmus Benestad from Met Norway last week: The recording is available on the EMS YouTube channel
The Journal of the European Meteorological Society has now been established and the 4th Volume of papers has been started. In total (Vol 1-3), 24 papers have been published, including two meeting summaries and one inaugural address. Vol 4 already contains four published papers. JEMS has now been indexed in the DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), a first step towards a wider visibility. The objective of JEMS is to become a sought-after publication forum for papers on aspects of general interest to meteorological and atmospheric science communities, and specifically overview and state-of-the-art papers on significant operational and scientific evolutions carried out within the European Meteorological Infra-structure (EMI), EU-lead initiatives and Projects, Private European Meteorological Enterprises, International Agencies, Universities and Research Institutes.
EMS2026 in Utrecht - Delta Climate in Europe: weather, water, and warnings The Programme Committee was overwhelmed by the many new session proposals received this year, adding emerging topics to the portfolio: All proposals were integrated into the programme; 45 different session are now providing opportunities for the community to present their work from different sectors and activities. Opportunities and support for young scientists are available through a number of support schemes and various events we plan specifically for Early Career Scientists, for example the speed networking event - we are calling for mentors of this valuable event: see details in the post below.
2026 awards: The deadlines for further prestigious awards are approaching fast, the winners of the S. Zilitinkevich Memorial Award, the EMS Young Scientist Award, the EMS Tromp Award in Biometeorology, and all three EMS Media Awards will be invited to the Annual Meeting in Utrecht to present their work in an award lecture.
Visit the posts below in this newsletter for more information on all these activities.
