Dear readers,

as the year draws to a close we look back at a year full of new initiatives and an inspiring conference in September in Ljubljana. A few "afterthoughts" are collected in this newsletter, notably A young scientist’s view on the EMS2025 Communication events or the feedback we received from the poster presenters. Anyone wanting to revisit some of the talks that were given in Ljubljana or online: check out the EMS Vimeo channel.

2025 is the first full year for the Journal of the EMS (JEMS) after the launch in 2024. Two special issues have been published, A tribute to Prof. Ehrhard Raschke and an issue to mark the 25th anniversary of the EMS. Find all about the latest updates and call for papers.

Preparations for the EMS2026 in Utrecht are already under way. The call for session proposals has been sent out last week. Find details at ems2026.eu. The programmatic focus of the 2026 Annual Meeting will be Delta Climate in Europe: weather, water, and warnings.

Finally, the first calls for 2026 award nominations are out. Details about submissions for the Silver Medal, the Technology Achievement Award and the Zilitinkevich Memorial Award can be found in the posts below.

Last EMS Webinar in 2025 on 10 December: Croatian meteorology in philately
The 34th Nordic Meteorological Meeting will be held in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, 27 – 29 May 2026.
The International Congress of Biometeorology (ICB2026) will take place 13 – 16 July 2026 in Novi Sad, Serbia. Abstract submission is open.

EMS2025: What poster presenters had to say

A big thank you to all the poster presenters who gave us feedback on the poster sessions, poster area, poster pitches and other aspects around poster presentations! Of the 190 poster presenters at EMS 2025, 45 provided feedback. Of these, 80% submitted their abstract with a preference to show their work in a poster while 11% would have preferred to give a talk during the lectures. Here are a few salient results from the survey.

Call: Sergej Zilitinkevich Memorial Award 2026

Nominations for the 2026 Award are accepted until 28 February 2026. The international award is delivered annually to a creative scientist who has made breakthroughs in “Boundary layer studies in atmospheric and ocean sciences”. Nominations for the award are openly selected within international research networks.

The EMS invites EMS Member Societies, EMS Associate Members, EMS Committees and Project Teams, and EMS Council members to make nominations for the Silver Medal 2026. Deadline is 31 January 2026.

La Météorologie Celebrates 100 Years of Climate and Weather Insight

In 2025, the journal La Météorologie marks a century of scientific reporting and climate observation. Founded in 1925 by the Société Météorologique de France — now the association Météo et Climat — the quarterly journal has grown alongside major scientific advances.

EMS2025 Communication events: A young scientist’s view

Communication in meteorology is essential. Without effective dissemination of that information, the impact of our work remains limited. Revolutionising our technical platforms, convincing stakeholders and the public, and encouraging forecasters to invest in communication as a core component of their work – all these challenges were addressed at the recent EMS meeting in Ljubljana.

Call for volunteers on EMS committees

The EMS committees play a vital role in the overall activities of the EMS; its members are volunteers, from EMS Member Societies and EMS Associate Members. We are looking for new members for two of the EMS committees: The EMS Technology Achievement Award Selection Committee and the EMS Committee on Meetings (CoM) – for three year terms starting as early as possible.

Listening to the Forest: AI-Driven Meteo-Acoustic Early Warning System for Wildfire Detection: Harry Otten Prize 2025

The Harry Otten Prize for Innovation in Meteorology 2025 has been awarded to Assaf Shmuel (Weizmann Institute of Science). His idea, Listening to the Forest, entails that fire has unique sounds, such as the crackle of embers or the snap of dry wood, which can be detected by AI-enhanced acoustic sensors.
