The University is seeking to employ a talented researcher to study Arctic climate in the H2020 APPLICATE project.
The environment of the Arctic is rapidly changing, impacting on both local and global climate. APPLICATE is a pan-European Horizon 2020 project which aims to develop enhanced predictive capacity for weather and climate in the Arctic and beyond, and to determine the influence of Arctic climate change on Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes, for the benefit of policy makers, businesses and society.
You will be involved in WP1 of APPLICATE (Observationally constraining models using advanced metrics and diagnostics) and WP3 (Determining the impact of Arctic climate change on mid latitudes through atmospheric and oceanic linkages). The aim of WP1 is to evaluate weather and climate models in the Arctic and mid-latitudes with advanced metrics and diagnostics (and in particular using the ESMValTool package). WP3 aims to use climate model experiments to determine the impact of changes in the Arctic on the mid latitudes through atmospheric and oceanic linkages. Effective collaboration with other members of the research team and APPLICATE (http://applicate.eu) will be required.
You will have:
- A PhD or equivalent in physical or mathematical sciences
- Experience of analysing or running climate models
- Strong scientific computing skills
- An understanding of physical processes relating to Arctic climate
