EMS LC: If you wanted to describe your society in one sentence, what would you say?
SMS: Our society, after a quiet period, is increasing its activity like a mythical phoenix.
Who invented the ceilometer? According to online sources the idea of how to make a ceilometer was first conceived by englishman Ty Beck in 1897. This is incorrect. As will be retold here, the principle was demonstrated as early as 1871 by the Danish meteorologist Poul la Cour. [more]

Astrid Rommetveit receives the EMS Jounrnalist Award for her very important work in helping to bridge the gap in understanding between experts and non-experts; she covers complex topics and presents them in an understandable and accessible way, without oversimplifying them. Rommetveit takes seriously one of the most important missions of journalists, which is to give the reader the full capacity to understand a complex topic.

The EMS Tromp Award will be awarded to a scientist for an excellent scientific paper in the field of biometeorology, published between 1 January 2015 and 1 June 2017.

Prof Dr Werner Wehry sadly passed away on 4 December 2016 aged 77. He was one of the founders of the European Meteorological Society and also served as the second President of the Society during the years 2002 to 2005. [more]
